Professional
Mr. Hector Melendez is an Intellectual Property Professional versed in a myriad of intellectual property issues. While his main focus involves US patent prosecution, he has a strong background in US trademark and copyright law.
Hector and Jeff have known each other for a quarter of a century beginning with their time at the United States Military Academy (West Point). They roomed together for several semesters and studied in the same academic department - Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS). While Jeff studied the former, Hector earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science in 1997.
Upon graduation, he received his commission as an officer in the United States Army before being honorably discharged as a Captain in 2002. Captain Melendez earned many honors and medals as an Air Defense Artillery officer.
Following his military service and prior to his current career endeavor, Hector began a successful and diverse career in the civilian sector holding positions in pharmaceutical and medical device sales, most notably for Pfizer Inc. He worked in the field industrial facilities management where he relied upon his training and leadership to succeed.
Hector has enjoyed the last two decades with Jeff both in professional and personal capacities. For instance, Jeff, who has always recognized Hector's many talents, recommended that he attend law school and become an intellectual property professional. In the fall of 2006, Hector commenced law school at the University of Florida, Levin College of Law. He graduated in 2009 with honors.
Immediately after law school, Mr. Melendez served as a certified legal intern and Assistant State Attorney for the Tenth Judicial Circuit in Polk County, Florida where he advocated on behalf of the People of the State of Florida. After his time as an Assistant State Attorney, Mr. Melendez transitioned into the private sector and joined Steven H. Artman, P.A. for several years, practicing many different types of law including criminal defense, family law, civil litigation, construction law, personal injury law, real estate law, business transactions, and probate services.
Heeding his call to serve, Hector returned to the federal government in 2012 as an Equal Employment Opportunity Specialist for the United States Department of Labor. His mission is to protect workers, promote diversity and enforce the law of the land.
